One morning, a young boy named Peter opened his gate and walked out into the big green meadow beyond it. Thus begins the musical tale of a small Russian boy who goes out to hunt a wolf and almost bites off more than he can chew!

This world premiere of an original adaptation of the classic Russian folk tale features both human and puppet actors in an exciting multimedia environment.  Following the familiar and dynamic score of Sergei Prokofiev, live actors interact with a variety of puppet characters from small to lifesize, to present an updated version of this story that will appeal to both adults and children of all ages.

OUR SKETCH BOOK

The play will begin with shadow puppets.

On the left you see an actor behind a screen, where the audience cannot see him.  He is holding up a large shadow puppet.  The light is being projected from behind him.  In front of the screen are bushes and trees to make the set look like a forest or meadow.

On the right is a sketch of what the "Grandfather" shadow puppet might look like.  It is held up and operated by long rods.

Later in the play, puppets and live actors take over telling the story.   On the left is what the larger puppets may look like;  this one is the Grandfather/Narrator.  It takes a team of puppeteers to work such a puppet, as you can see in both these sketches. One of these puppeteers works the mouth of the puppet and is the puppet's voice.

Costuming ideas

For our auditions, we are not only looking for actors to play the boy and the wolf and other "human" or speaking parts, but  we are looking for anyone who would like to learn how to work with puppets-- we need a lot of puppeteers, as well as backstage tech crew.

Speaking roles include: one boy age 8-15 yrs old; one male speaking role age 20 and up; and several male and female non-speaking roles from ages 15 and up.   You don't have to "audition" to be a puppeteer - just bring your enthusiasm and creativity!

Auditions are earlier than usual:  Jan. 9 & 10 at 7 p.m.  The production doesn't open until April 14.  But we will start working together right away building the puppets, and learning puppetry techniques.  We will work on teamwork, voice, and movement.  It will be a lot of fun bringing these characters to life!
